Employer: Superdrug, Challenge: Manage a volume of applications following move to online recruitment Specialist: Jobpartners Superdrug's initial move online three years ago involved launching a careers website as well as advertising on job boards, receiving applications via e-mail. While this meant the company reached a wider pool of candidates, it opened the floodgates in terms of application volumes. Mishandling of the recruitment process is always damaging to the emplyer brand, but in retail sector the stakes are high, "If that experience for the candidate is not a good one, you may lose a customer aswell" says Richard Doherty, Sales Director at Jobpartners. Superdrug's entire recruitment process has now been automated and moved online, underpinned by Jobpartners technology. Superdrug has now reduced its cost per hire by 87% and the company now recruits 54% of its store and head office management and pharmacist vacancies via its website.

The mass disruption predicted for the recruitment industry, as the internet and other new technology took hold, never quite came to pass. Rather, as the market evolves, the accompanying technologies are doing so with it. That evolution is starting ro drive out inefficiency as companies begin to automate time-consuming processes. Cutting costs is not necessarily their priority. Just as importnant, if not more so, is the competitive advantage to recruit the best people. The right technological tools are fast becoming decisive weapons in the fight for talent, according to Xavier Marchioni, CEO of Jobpartners. "The motivation behind the desire to invest in this technology is about improving productivity and managing talent."

New anti-discrimination legislation and its implications

The legislation will make it unlawful for any prospective employer to discriminate against an applicant on the grounds of age : - In recruitment arrangements (including advertisements); - In the terms of employment offered; or- When refusing employment . "One way of ensuring that the recruitment process is as objective as possible is through using e-recruitment technology," says Patrice Barbdette, Founder of Jobpartners. He says: " E-recruitment enables recruiters to develop selection criteria so that they can search across a database of CVs for candidates who possess the right skills and have the right experience for the job, while at the same time removing details that may lead to discrimination , such as name, sex, age, any disabilities or specific religious beliefs . This CV analysis then produces a ranking system which allows the recruiter to select a person for an interview based purely on his or her skills and experience . Some e-recruitment technology also enables candidates to remove personal details such as sex and age before they submit their application."
